Sustainable Free-Range Egg & Biodiversity Enterprise near York
Sustainable Free-Range Egg & Biodiversity Enterprise near York
Caroline is seeking 0.5 – 1 acre of land within commuting distance of York to establish a small-scale, sustainable poultry enterprise focused on free-range egg production. Her vision is to create a system that enhances biodiversity, carbon sequestration and provides food to the local community, with scope for future expansion into complementary systems such as a plant nursery or orchard.
With over 20 years’ experience in regenerative and organic land management, Caroline has developed practical knowledge in permaculture principles and diverse plant cultivation. She currently manages three allotment sites in York, where she keeps poultry and grows a wide range of edible crops. Her work includes experimenting with species such as Chilean guava, honey berry, multiple apple varieties and other crops. She is now exploring sustainable egg production both as a long-term business and as a research opportunity, investigating its potential role in strengthening local food security.
Caroline is looking for 0.5–1 acre of land where she can begin with a small flock of chickens and scale gradually over time. She is committed to developing the right infrastructure, understanding the land carefully, and transitioning to working at the site full-time as the enterprise grows. Although highly experienced, she is a new entrant farmer who wants to take the appropriate time and care to establish the business in the right way. She takes biosecurity seriously and is fully aware of the precautions required regarding avian flu.
Caroline currently works for a local charity focused on improving mental health through access to nature and increasing biodiversity. Any land she stewards would be managed not only for productivity but also for aesthetic and community well-being. She would welcome collaboration with a landowner interested in enhancing biodiversity, creating educational opportunities, and supporting wellbeing through access to nature.
