Social Enterprise Farm Project Seeking Land Near Stockport / Manchester
Social Enterprise Farm Project Seeking Land Near Stockport / Manchester
De Butterfly CIC is an established organisation based in Manchester who run events centered around the wellbeing and empowerment of migrant women. De Butterfly CIC have a track record of delivering community programmes across Greater Manchester rooted in reducing isolation among migrant women and providing trauma-informed support.
They are aiming to access land to develop a community-led food growing enterprise, which will be used for sustainable food production and the production of culturally appropriate produce. De Butterfly CIC is a migrant women-led initiative with a strong Black African cultural focus, and aim to focus some growing efforts on the production of West African vegetables. The project will develop towards selling to local markets, as well as running activities around therapeutic gardening, other forms of wellbeing, and developing the employability of beneficiaries.
The founder, Folashade, comes from a farming family and is motivated to continue a legacy of farming, sharing these skills and benefits with the community in and around Manchester. The site will bring potential for intergenerational learning — bringing farming heritage, diaspora food knowledge, and young people’s development together. Folashade has identified that food-growing is an excellent outlet for other migrant women: boosting wellbeing, improving knowledge and skills, and ultimately providing routes to employment and community wealth building.
The site would ideally be based near Stockport, Rochdale or Greater Manchester, and should be accessible for members of the community to come to, work at, and volunteer with the farm, as well as receive the benefits of wellbeing activities, workshops, and potentially a cafe or other public-facing establishment. The site will be a haven for migrant women in particular, but could be developed for other beneficiaries or customers.
De Butterfly CIC would be interested in developing some covered infrastructure to grow young plants, as well as a space for holding workshops. Presence of, or proximity to, accommodation near the site would be a bonus for residential course opportunities.
De Butterfly CIC has an engaged network throughout Manchester and has demonstrated a strong value to the community. The group want to use a land offer opportunity to develop their offering, and create more capacity for activities and revenue streams. Their aim is not simply to create a growing site, but a long-term vision for healing land, healing people, and building sustainable livelihoods rooted in dignity. Their space will be one of learning, healing, and ultimately sharing the joy of food.
