Organic Dairy Manager Seeking Land for Micro-Dairy, Cumbria

Organic Dairy Manager Seeking Land for Micro-Dairy, Cumbria

This landseeker is looking for 20-30 hectares in the North West of England to establish an organic micro-dairy, ideally in the South Lakes or surrounding area.

Well-connected within the organic dairy scene across the North of England, he has been building skills and knowledge while working toward starting his own enterprise. He is currently working as a Dairy Farm Manager and has a strong repertoire of practical experience. He has been developing his knowledge base for his new enterprise through his networks, contacts and extensive research, and exploring how a small dairy farm can thrive within the realities of the current UK market.

Alongside working on the land, he has been developing his cheese-making skills and refining a semi-hard Single Gloucester-style cheese made on-farm that he believes will be key to the success of his business. He is passionate about creating a unique cheese that represents the flavours of the landscape and the herd it comes from. His cheese has already received positive feedback from respected cheesemongers and makers within the industry after touring the North of England with his product!

He plans to keep a small herd of Dairy Shorthorns, working in line with the seasons by spring calving and capitalising on summer grazing. Committed to organic principles, this landseeker would ultimately like to sell an organic product, although certification isn’t essential.

For a landowner, this represents an opportunity to support an ambitious and hardworking young farmer who has already scoped out the industry. He has developed great practical skills and good relationships within his industry. With the right land partnership, he is ready to establish a new and creative dairy enterprise to produce a high-quality farmhouse cheese for the UK market.
