Grain Seed Production & Heritage Growing in the Hope Valley, Derbyshire

Grain Seed Production & Heritage Growing in the Hope Valley, Derbyshire

Eloise is looking for land in and around the Hope Valley, Derbyshire, to develop a small-scale enterprise centred around seed production and heritage crops, and potentially a market garden, ultimately aiming to increase the resilience of local food systems.

She is currently undertaking a year-long seed production training course with the Gaia Foundation, and has several years of experience working in food systems communications as well as running her own established coffee roasting business. She is also a graphic designer with branding skills that will support the eventual sales of her products.

She wants to establish a local grain seed production project, developing locally adapted grain populations that can be shared with and grown by other farmers and growers in the area. She is particularly interested in growing locally produced, resilient seed that will contribute to more diverse and sustainable food systems suited to local climates. Alongside grain seed production, Eloise wants to explore the idea of a heritage vegetable plant nursery and small market garden, and is also interested in growing plants and producing seed for natural dyes.

She is looking for the right site to establish and develop this project, ideally having access to a reliable water supply, suitable covered growing space, such as a polytunnel, and perhaps buildings or a shed for storage.

Eloise is keen to connect with supportive landowners interested in encouraging diverse, local food production, and exploring experimental ideas that could contribute to the local food and farming landscape.
