Opportunity for an Organic Horticulturalist, Tamar Valley, Cornwall

Opportunity for an Organic Horticulturalist, Tamar Valley, Cornwall

Pru manages her land in the Tamar Valley as a rewilding site but also understands the value of having land in production of food. She is therefore offering a 2.5 acre parcel of land for organic horticultural production. The land is currently being used as grazed pasture and has had a regenerative seeding mix before that, Pru can run her pigs over it to turn the soil if required. The soil is free draining loam over shillet, tending to acidic, with high phosphate and pottash. There is an established apple and cherry orchard which would also be available to a new tenant. It would be expected that the horticulture business would become organic certified.

Pru would like to find someone fairly local to the area to take the plot on but for the right person will accept someone moving from further afield to a local address. There could be additional employment on the farm as well as managing the pigs. The rewilded land is being taken on by Devon Wildlife Trust and along with Pru’s commitment to monthly Saturday farm walk days the Trust will run 20 open days per year. The land is accessed by an area of hard standing used as a shared car park, any infrastructure would need planning permission due to the National Landscape designation and would need to be installed on the field. Water would be metered but rent would likely be a peppercorn or an exchange, to be negotiated, a compost toilet could be developed with the support of Devon Wildlife Trust. There isn’t any accommodation but Pru would be open to seeking planning permission for a temporary dwelling and there is precedent locally.

This opportunity would suit a landseeker looking for a place to set up their business long term on a blank canvas in a valley famed for its horticultural production.
