One Acre as Part of a Self-Sufficiency Smallholding, Near Poole, Dorset

Meet Jim and Gill, a friendly couple working their four acre plot to provide for themselves and their local community. They produce fruit and veg with 50 apple trees and 50 other trees, along with a small flock of sheep and some beehives. They love farming but are getting on in age and would appreciate some help with the farm to allow them to leave every now and again. They are offering a 1 acre field to a landseeker for a labour exchange, not very much work just helping out now and then. After the tenant is turning a profit they would take a very small percentage in rent. There is no accommodation being offered.

The plot is slightly sloping, with drained ground and is well protected by trees to the South West. The soil is a good loam, which may be slightly acidic. The ground can be very soft and isn’t suitable for a tractor even in summer so Jim and Gill have a two wheeled tractor that they use instead. They would like to see horticulture on the plot as this would be appropriate for the scale and if the initial period is successful they would look at a 5 year land agreement offering the possibility to expand the arrangement as the owners limit their involvement with the land. There is a small chalet on the land with a gas stove for tea making, a compost toilet and a water supply from mains and rainwater capture. Jim and Gill would be happy to loan various tools such as the two wheeled tractor, chainsaw, strimmer and rotavator.

This opportunity would suit a new entrant just starting out with a small scale horticulture enterprise who would benefit from supportive and kind landlords. Would suit an individual or a couple, but sorry no dogs.
