Land-Based Enterprise Opportunities on a Family Farm, East Yorkshire

On a family farm in East Yorkshire, The Wolds Project is working to welcome people onto the land and experiment with regenerative practices. Fourth-generation farmer Jennie and her husband Lawrence are exploring new enterprises and creative approaches that could increase production, educate others on sustainable food supply chains, and create more community on-farm.

As a family, they have been diversifying how they manage the land, reducing fertiliser use, increasing diversity, and rotating a small flock of sheep around pastures and cover-cropped arable land. They have recently completed their first eco-build, which has welcomed visitors onto the farm, and they are currently supplying bread made from home-grown wheat and eggs from their own chickens to guests, as well as producing lamb boxes for local direct sales.

  • They want to meet people who are interested in bringing their ideas to the land, and have identified a number of possibilities:
A plot ideal for flower growing, wildflowers, or market gardening.
  • An interest in agroforestry, with possibilities for a landseeker to establish and manage agroforestry rows in collaboration with the family.
  • Potential to expand the sheep flock and increase the use of herbal leys or diverse forage.
  • Possibilities to expand beehives and pollinator populations.
  • Room for other creative ideas that involve wheat, poultry, crafts, and education.

The family are interested in working with people who share their vision for working with nature and regeneratively, and who would be respectful of the existing family farm and its way of working.

On site, there is good access from the main b-road, a farmyard with some storage available, and existing machinery. There is also the potential to make use of the wider farm infrastructure as ideas develop, depending on the enterprise and what is needed.

The family are open to exploring different approaches with potential landseekers, and are particularly interested in people who can bring their own ideas, energy, and experience to the farm. There is scope to develop an enterprise over time, working collaboratively with the family to experiment with ideas and find out what works on the land.

If you have an idea for a land-based enterprise that could fit with the farm, the family would be interested to hear from you.
