Established Poultry Enterprise on an Organic Farm, Leeds

Swillington Organic Farm, just south-east of Leeds, is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic landseeker to take on and develop its poultry enterprise.

The family-run farm has successfully established a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, with a share farmer managing the market garden, a loyal customer base, a small farm shop and strong links with the local community. They are now looking to welcome additional share farmers to develop other enterprises on the farm.

The landowner is open to different approaches to managing the poultry enterprise, including using chicken tractors for rotational systems alongside the vegetable enterprise. Currently, there are 100 laying hens supplying a popular egg club, and the farm has previously kept ducks, geese and turkeys. Existing CSA customers provide an established route to market.

The successful applicant will have experience working with poultry and be willing to take responsibility for developing and managing the enterprise, including meeting organic certification requirements. A slaughter licence would be ideal but is not essential, as the farm has a slaughter facility and cold storage on site.

Some capital investment will be expected from the landseeker, particularly in improving fencing and animal housing. The intention is to establish a share farming agreement, with both risk and revenue shared between the landowner and landseeker.

Swillington is a lively and collaborative farm, and the landowner is looking for someone who will become part of the wider farm community — someone willing to learn about the other enterprises, help out when needed and contribute positively to the farm’s future.

This is an opportunity to build a poultry enterprise within an established organic farming business, with access to infrastructure, machinery, experience, established markets and a supportive farming network.
