Enterprise Stacking on Family Farm, Dorchester, Dorset
Enterprise Stacking on Family Farm, Dorchester, Dorset
A lovely opportunity to develop a market garden or similar enterprise within a small family sheep farm on an acre of land near Dorchester, currently being managed by the next generation of the family. Over the last five years only farmyard manure has been used to fertilise the soil which is loamy greensand on south facing fairly flat ground, it has also been worked over by pigs recently. Due to the whole site being on a private water supply the owners are looking for someone to cultivate crops which won’t need an abundance of water, avoiding salad leaves for instance and without livestock, in the past root vegetables were planned for this site which would be ideal.
The vision for the next five years is to further develop the number of enterprises on the land, opening up areas to other forms of farming. They are open to ideas for enterprises to stack with an orchard next to the plot which could compliment a market garden enterprise along with opportunities for beehives across the farm. There is a hope that with multiple stacked enterprises symbiotic relationships could develop with collaborative routes to market. This opportunity is for a conscientious grower who can maintain a tidy garden and work well with others on site. Rent is £360 per year but may be negotiable in certain circumstances. The contract will be for five years with the option to leave after two years, with a minimum of 12 months notice.
This is a great opportunity for someone who is looking for some land within a working farm and community, with a willingness to build their enterprise alongside the landowners as opportunities develop.
